Bay Bluffs Park, a 32-acre park owned by the City of Pensacola, contains boardwalks and nature trails down the cliffs to the water, along with scenic vistas and close-up views of the bluffs.
Scenic Highway is located in Escambia County is approximately 11 miles in length. The roadway is recognized for its scenic, historical, natural, and recreational intrinsic resources. Scenic vistas are a highlight as the road travels atop unique red clay bluffs that rise above Escambia Bay and represent the highest point along the entire coastline of Florida.
The only known example along the Gulf Coast of red clay bluffs are along the eastern shore of Escambia Bay. They represent the highest point along the entire coastline of Florida. This feature caused the earliest Spanish explorers to establish the first settlement in the sheltered bay near the bluffs in 1559.
Bay Bluffs Park technically closes at dusk - however its shady nighttime activity proves that locals pay little attention to this rule. The beach is a well-known hangout for homosexual lovers, druggies and their dealers, local LARP-ing groups, and teenage hoodlums of all kinds. Last year alone there were over 15 reported stabbings, shootings, and other illicit-type violence after dark in this area... its rugged terrain once you leave the appointed Boardwalk makes it impossible for police to patrol the area with any accuracy. There is also a deep dry riverbed that winds its way through the southern side of the park (estimated 3 to 4 feet deep), its banks overgrown with trees and shrubs. In heavy rains it serves as a run-off channel for Scenic Highway above, emptying into the bay below.
